Malaysia is serious about making sure conservation supports the socio-economic status of the people and local communities, particularly in Sabah, says Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment Datuk Christina Liew.

Speaking at the opening of the 14th South East Asia Biosphere Reserves Network (SeaBRnet) Meeting at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) on Sunday, she said:

“The Government’s seriousness on conservation is reflected in designating a contiguous Crocker Range Tropical Rainforest with an area of more than 800,000 hectares located in the western part of Sabah under the UNESCO frameworks of conservation and sustainable development due to its Outstanding Universal and International values.

“This move makes Sabah the third in the World to receive the UNESCO Triple Crown title covering the Kinabalu Park World Heritage Site, Crocker Range Biosphere Reserve, and Kinabalu UNESCO Global Geopark, after Jeju, Korea and Shennonjia, China.”

The Minister stressed that SeaBRnet is a collaborative effort to safeguard our common heritage, and it is built upon five key pillars, namely Biosphere Reserves Conservation, Cultural Exchange and Preservation, Sustainable Tourism, Research and Knowledge Sharing, and Youth and Community Engagement.
