145kg of plastic trash, bottles collected in Pulau Sibuan

SEMPORNA: As much as 145 kilograms of plastic trash and bottles were collected in Pulau Sibuan here in conjunction with the ‘Jiwa Murni’ Programme organised by the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) at KD Sri Semporna Base. Programme coordinator, Captain Dr M. Ari Krishnan said the joint programme with Green Semporna Nature Lovers Club aims to ensure the island here is always clean and well-maintained as well as educate the residents to keep it clean.

“The dirty environment will expose us to various diseases. Litter and toxic waste dumped everywhere reveals adverse effects on aquatic life and humans, let alone Semporna which is renowned as a world-famous marine tourism centre,” he told Bernama. About 70 people comprising volunteers, members of the navy, members of the Sabah Parks, tourists, and residents participated in the programme. Meanwhile, the Founder of Green Semporna Rehna Ismail said the programme aims to continue to cultivate an attitude of appreciation and love among the people of Semporna for the environment.
