Ex-situ Garden - The Amazing Wild Species

The Ex-situ gardens had been developed to meet the rising demands of visitors for additional attractions in Sabah Parks. Also, It features a garden, nursery and hatchery for education, research and preservation purposes. Among garden which had been established were:


1. KINABALU PARK

* Mount Kinabalu Botanical Garden
This centre houses most of the Kinabalu plant collection of  estimated more than 2,000 flowering plants (orchid, nepenthes, rhododendron, etc). But, not included the innumerable moses, ferns and fungi.

 

1.2 Poring Hot Springs station, Kinabalu Park

* Butterfly Farm
Poring Hot Spring’s butterfly farm is in fact the first butterfly farm in Borneo. It features a garden, nursery and hatchery for education, research and preservation purposes. Be on the lookout for the Rajah Brooke's Birdwing - Malaysia's endangered national butterfly.

 

* Orchid Conservation Centre
This centre houses the largest collection of Sabah orchids as well as rare endemic orchids. Some 1, 200 species of orchids are available at this centre.

 

* Tropical Garden
A small tropical garden houses a few species of exotic birds in an aviary. Also, a glimpse of mouse deers - the world's smallest deer and deers frolicking in the garden.

 

* Rafflesia Research Centre
This centre houses the collection of Rafflesia (Keithii and Pricei.) - the world's largest flower.

 

* Bamboo Garden
The Bamboo Garden is strongly related to Poring because the name “Poring” means Bamboo (species Gigantochloa levis) in the dialect of Dusun people. The locals were using bamboo pole, which is abundant in Poring, to build their bamboo houses.

 

* Ethnobotanical Gardens
The Ethnobotanical Garden displays some useful and medicinal plants as well as jungle fruits.

 

1.3. Mesilau station, Kinabalu Park

 * Nepenthes Farm
This centre houses the largest collection of pitcher plant as well as rare endemic and the world's biggest pitcher plant - the Nepenthes Rajah, which can hold 1.5 liter of water.

 
1.4 Serinsim station

 * Serinsim Deer Farm

2. CROCKER RANGE PARK

 * Fern Rehabilitation Centre
This centre houses the various of fern species collection.

 * Insectarium
This centre houses the various of insect species collection.

 

3. TAWAU HILLS PARK

 * Tawau Hills Botanical Garden
This centre houses the various of lowland species collection.

 * Bird Conservation Centre
This centre houses the various of bird species collection.

 * Dipterocarp Garden
This centre houses the various of dipterocarp species collection.

 

4. TUN SAKARAN MARINE PARK

 * Marine Inverterbrate Conservation Centre

This centre houses the various of inverterbrate species collection.
