At the same time, biodiversity pattern will be disturb and affecting their abundance, growth and distribution. So called ‘Forest carbon storage’ is a type of vegetation forms that may prevent global warming.
Vegetation or forest thrives differently according to its biogeography and latitude. For example, in tropics, moderate increase can promote productivity while excessive increase can lead to water stress and slow growth.
Sabah Parks has taken few initiatives to contribute towards preventing this global warming from continuing. They have used the natural forest as resource to understand climate change phenomenon by conducting relevant researches and studies at their research stations within the parks areas.
This research is been conducted under Research and Education Division, to be specific the Botany Unit manage vegetation monitoring which was one of the initiatives by Sabah Parks in order to understand this climate change phenomenon. Other initiatives can be seen through collaboration between other units or visiting scientists for ecological study within the parks areas.
Research activities also held in Kinabalu Park and Poring Conservation Center. Permanent Research Plots was used for vegetation monitoring such as forest structure, forest dynamics and tree phenology. Specific tools were placed at Permanent Research Plots for these research and monitoring activities.
Mt. Tambuyukon located at Kinabalu Park was addressed as a research station for climate change issues. Based on previous studies there are so many series of fieldwork conducted at this area since 1961 to 2009. A Scientific Expedition carried out in 2009 at the mountain bringing up the objectives to identify threats and conservation strategy, identify potential research sites for a long term research related to climate change, and inventory of flora and fauna.
Sabah Parks also involved in Tripartite Research Initiative on research and monitoring climate change. The other two parties that taking part in this initiative is University Kebangsaan Malaysia and University Malaysia Sabah.
From all initiatives done, Sabah Parks has initiated the monitoring of climate change effect on biodiversity. Funding to upgrade tools such as weather station and computer software will increase the potential of Sabah Parks’ research quality.
